Are you resisting growth?

Are you resisting growthA few years ago, I was working in a technology company as the Head of their sales and marketing team. It was a senior management position with all the right perks, but I did not like my job..

I liked my own business team, but I did not like the culture or direction that the executives wanted the business to go..

One day, I was speaking to one of my management colleagues about the kind of company I wanted to build. I was fantasizing about my remote team, flexible work hours, commitment to serving vs. selling etc…..

On this day, I think she had gotten tired of my chatter and she looked at me and said; ‘Tale, why don’t you resign and go and create that company?!.

Immediately she said that, I Froze!.

I looked at her with mixed emotions of anger, fear and uncertainty. I was angry because I felt she was mocking me, I was afraid because considering the possibility of leaving my comfort zone made me scared and I was uncertain because I thought maybe I should actually go and do it……..

Did I take her advice? NO! At least not for a while….Until something happened that made my comfort zone so uncomfortable that I knew I had to make the jump..

Today, I look back, and I am glad I did.  .

Have you complained about something several times and yet not done anything about it? You are resisting growth…..

Are you uncomfortable with how things are right now in your business or life and yet you are not willing to do anything about it? You are resisting growth…. .

Robert Kiyosaki of the rich dad, poor dad fame shared a story about a woman that came to him several times to complain that her business was not growing..

He asked her; have you attended any training? She said no, what do they want to teach me that I don’t know?.

He said okay, why don’t you read books about growing your business? She said she did not have the time! .

He looked at her surprised, but made one more suggestion; have you worked with a business coach? She looked at him in anger and said; why do I want to waste money I don’t really have?.

This woman was resisting the growth she thought she wanted. And even though her words said she desired it, her actions proved other wise. Don’t be like this woman…...

  1. We all resist growth like this woman. I know I do. Why? Growth is painful. It requires that we pay a hefty price. Most often, we choose to live and operate from our comfort zones but that is not where our fulfillment lies. I’ve found immense fulfillment from my journey into entrepreneurship but it’s not been easy. It’s been tough on my body, soul, and sprit but I’ll have it no other way. It’s been an investment of blood, tears, and sweat but it’s all part of the game. Walking the path of purpose is challenging and most people don’t want to make that kind of commitment. I made the commitment in 2007 when I resigned from my Journalism job to pursue my passion and purpose. It’s been one hell of a journey but I’m grateful I’m still standing. I’ve suffered depression, it’s been a lonely path but I keep pushing forward. I choose to grow, regardless of the pain. Thanks for sharing, Tale.
