Queen Bey, coachella and scale lessons

Did the buzz catch up with you?

I woke up last week Sunday and the whole social media was buzzing with pop culture news that Queen B originally known as Beyoncé had performed a feat ‘not common’ to  mere mortals.

She had captivated audiences around the globe with her riveting 90 minutes performance. Many sang her praises for giving such an A-grade performance just ten months after giving birth to twins.

Even media outlets who has criticized her 2016 Super Bowl performance as being mediocre had suddenly turned around and were singing her praises for setting the platinum standard for performance and retaining her place as one of the greatest performers in this age! ( Awon Aye-in my Yoruba parlance :-)).

The buzz rang through last week with several people making memes and renaming Coachella; Beychella.

I am not one to be carried away by buzz because I know that you don’t create anything great without a lot of dedication, resilience and even setbacks.

I decided to dig deep to understand what went on behind the scenes of her epic performance and I found out a few things….

One year in waiting

The 90-minute performance that made Queen B receive all those accolades was actually one year in waiting!

Beyonce set her eyes on performing at Coachella 2017 and had begun to mentally prepare for it before she received the good news that she was expecting twins.

Although she was happy about the twins, she was sad that Coachella was not going to happen. However, she believed that another opportunity would present itself and it did one year later.

Lesson: sometimes life can take an unexpected turn, but you have to keep you eye on the ball of what you desire.

It takes time to create overnight success

Once she was confirmed to perform at Coachella, Beyoncé and her crew booked and closed down a practice venue for 4 MONTHS! Who does that?

It has to be someone that understands that a great performance required a lot of practice and that to be excellent at your act(business) you need to INVEST your time and resources.

Lesson: If you want to be at the top of your industry and scale your business, be ready to invest time and resources to make it happen.

You need an A-team

People lauded Beyonce for the surprise reunion of Destiny’s Child during one of the performances on that day.

She also did a dance duet with her sister Solange and a song/rap duet with her husband Jay-Z. She knew if she wanted to win, she needed her best people and she assembled them.

Lesson: Don’t think you can do it on your own. You can’t build a successful business or scale your business on your own, you need an A-team of advisers, staff, experts and maybe coaches.

My respect for Queen B grew some more as I studied her process and method because I realized once again that success leaves clues.
