As the festivities are going on, it is a good time to take some time out to reflect on this incredible year and make plans for the new year.
You might not be inspired to plan because of how this year has turned out, but like the popular quote goes “If you fail to plan. you plan to fail”.
It is better to have a plan that did not quite work out how you wanted it than to have no plan at all. Why? Because a plan gives you a sense of purpose and focus. You wake up every morning knowing your life has meaning.
In planning for a new year, I usually follow a three step process:
1. Decision: At the beginning of the planning process, I decide on a theme for the year and the top 3-5 areas of my life I want to focus on in the new year.
2. Visioning: at this stage, I spend time imagining what I want for the new year in my focus areas. I usually close my eyes and paint pictures of the new year in my mind. I go deep in my imagination and try to see myself doing the exact thing I want to be doing or I want to happen in the new year. This stage can take an hour or more depending on how imaginative you are.
I don’t bother about how I will make it happen at this stage so that I don’t limit my dreams.
3. Articulating: At this stage, once I have gotten a clear vision of what I want, I write it down in specific sentences so that it is clear and I know what I want. I also find image representation of what I want. For example I want my family to get a certain type of house in the new year, I found a picture that closely depicts the house I want.
You can collect these images and put it in a physical or virtual vision board to keep you stimulated and remind you of your focus through out the year
After these 3 main steps, I usually have a clear plan on what I want for the new year. However it does not stop there….
After articulating what you want, you would need to develop the strategies to get or attract what you want.
Yesterday my team and I went through a design thinking exercise during our strategy session to come up with clear strategies and action steps for the new year. We left the session with a clear direction and action plan for 2021.
Since I have started this process of working from visioning to strategy, I have seen a lot more of my dreams come to pass.
I want to help you make 2021 your best year yet no matter what the year brings! I want to work with your personally or with your team to go through the visioning, strategy and planning exercises.
We can do this through an exclusive VIP day session or a team strategy session either online or offline. Learn more about my sessions HERE.
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Can we dream together?
