This time of the year is quite interesting because we are in a season of major parties, events and weddings! Yes weddings seem to be the highlight of it all. lol..

When I was younger, I once asked why people waited till the year was coming to an end to get married, some brilliant older Aunt or Uncle( I can’t remember which and looking back I don’t even know if they were brilliant?!) told me it was because people worked and saved their money so they could have enough money to finance the wedding towards the end of the year..

Even then, it puzzled me that people will work a whole year just to fund an occasion that will last a few days..

I dared not question their brilliant assertion though, I had learned my lesson after I questioned my Secondary school Economics teacher as to why we just didn’t print more money if there was a scarcity( yes I was one of those curiously annoying people. Lol. Little wonder I became a business coach!). He looked at me puzzled and after a few seconds that seemed like forever, he asked the class to research it and tell him the answer. I would never forget the dagger stares I got from my classmates….

Anyway as I prepare for the Business growth master class , I was pondering how I could show you that you will get value by investing in this knowledge to grow your business especially in the current economic quagmire and I was taken down memory lane to an encounter I had with one of my clients turned friend a couple of years ago…..

At that time, we were putting structures and systems in her business that was then a small beauty company with one branch..

Even though her business was still small at that time, I admired one thing about her; she was dogged and determined to succeed and she was willing to re-invest the business finances to get the knowledge, consulting and help she needed to grow her business. .

On one of the days I visited her to find out how our team was doing; I mentioned that one of ‘our’ mutual friends was getting married and had asked us to buy aso-ebi. She replied me with a sharp tone: I don’t buy aso-ebi, I am investing in my business! I was a bit taken aback because at that time with my ‘big girl’ consultant income, I was all about keeping up with the Joneses. (I know better now, lol.).

I thought she would budge with some pressure but she has maintained that stance over the years and little wonder her business has grown to become a multi-million dollar company with about 20 branches in Africa…..

It is interesting that something similar happened to me a few weeks ago… So we went for ‘a’ friends wedding and while we were there, we were informed that another of ‘our’ friends was getting married and we needed to buy aso-ebi…I immediately replied sharply: I don’t buy aso-ebi. They too looked at me puzzled and I started laughing when I remembered the incident from some years ago..

By the way, I know there are some aso-ebi’s you can’t avoid(maybe you can..) like that of a close relative (aso-ebi actually means the uniform worn by family according to Wikipedia), but as you probably know, any one who is titled as ‘a’ or ‘our’ friend is not really a close friend or family…. .

The point I am really making is prioritizing what matters to you right now and if you want to grow a remarkably successful business, you should make investing in the knowledge and help to grow your business a priority..

It is what you invest in that will give you results. What you sow, you will reap..
